“There's no reason why he can't succeed”

A former Liverpool star believes Gareth Southgate is the perfect candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

Klopp will leave the Reds at the end of the season after nine years at the club, leaving a huge void to fill whoever succeeds him.

Xavi Alonso is reportedly the favorite for the role, but Liverpool face competition from Bayern Munich for the highly-rated Spaniard.

Southgate, meanwhile, is preparing to lead England into Euro 2024, but there is plenty of gossip suggesting this could be his last and he will bow out and potentially return to club management.

One of the Three Lions boss's roles is to take over from Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, but Glen Johnson believes he is more than capable of succeeding Jurgen Klopp.

He told Betfred: “It's awkward to talk about because you don't want to be speculating in a big tournament whether the England manager will go elsewhere.

“If he's available in the summer then you have to look at all your options. He's done well for England so there's no reason why he can't succeed at a club like Liverpool where he'll be facing players of a similar caliber.

“You need to have the chat because you can't fire him if he's available.”

Alonso not ready for Liverpool yet

Alonso is the fans' first choice to take over and continue the good job Klopp has done, and while Johnson agrees to a certain extent, he feels someone else needs to come on first.

“I believe someone needs to come in after Jurgen Klopp and take the bullet first,” he added.

“I know it sounds scary and cruel, but whoever comes in next can't be better than Jurgen and that's a testament to the team he's built at Liverpool.”
