He has represented his country at under-21 level

An unnamed Premier League footballer has been diagnosed with laughing gas addiction.

Emergency services were called after a friend of the former under-21 footballer found him surrounded by illegal nitrous oxide canisters in his city center apartment, the Daily Mail reported.

The player has reportedly returned to using laughing gas after undergoing rehabilitation.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and issued a stern reminder to the footballer, who is said to have tried repeatedly to kick the habit.

The Players Club is aware of the matter.

They have been providing extensive support for some time and were involved in the decision to send him to a specialist rehabilitation center earlier this season.

What is laughing gas?

Nitrous oxide, known as “hippie crack,” is stored in tanks and used to fill balloons, which are inhaled to provide a quick “high.”

Risks of using it include heart disease, stroke and brain damage.

In November last year, the law was changed to classify nitrous oxide as a controlled Class C drug. Possession of inhalants is now a criminal offence.

There are also concerns that the use of laughing gas among Premier League players is high and routine post-match drug testing is unlikely to detect it.
