The film, released in 2008, sparked controversy for its depiction of disabled people and minorities, with Downey Jr. appearing in blackface in the film.

Last year, Ben Stiller responded to claims of “cancel culture” related to the film, saying he “won't apologize for it” and remains “proud of it.”

Downey Jr., who stars in the comedy-drama alongside the likes of Stiller and Jack Black, stars as smug Australian method actor Kirk Lazarus, who plays Sergeant Lincoln Osiris.

So he plays an actor who plays a character in a movie.

Downey's character in the film is black, so Lazarus underwent controversial “pigment-changing” surgery for the role.

In the movie, this is depicted as controversial and criticized by several other characters, such as Alpaca Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) on several occasions where the cast stops to argue about their characters The scene features an attack on Lazarus.

But there's still some real-world backlash.

Speaking on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Downey Jr. explained why he took the role and said he has no regrets about playing the controversial character.

But he admits he did have some doubts before filming.

He said: “I thought 'yeah, I'll do this and then I'll do this iron Man Then I started thinking 'this is a bad idea, wait a minute'.

“Then I was like 'Hang in there, man, know where your heart is,' and my heart was: A, in my head, I'm going to stay black for the summer, so that's it for me.

“The other thing is, I have to hold on to the crazy selfish hypocritical nature of artists and what they think they can do occasionally, and that's just my opinion.”

He did reveal that his mom wasn't too impressed with the movie…

Downey Jr. said, “There's no way this isn't going to be a disgusting nightmare movie,” but he said about 90 percent of his black friends told him, “Man, this is great” after watching it. tropical thunder.

Responding to critics who thought Downey was wrong to take on the role, he said he “can't disagree with them, but I know where my heart is.”

RDJ has since doubled down on his support for the film

Rob Lowe's new appearance Literally! During the podcast, the actor once again defended his character.

“I look back at 'All in the Family' and they had some disclaimers at the beginning of the show,” he said.

He was referring to Norman Lear's sitcom “All in the Family,” which also dealt with social issues such as racism.

The “disclaimer” itself says: “The show you are about to watch is Everything is in the family. It attempts to focus on our vulnerabilities, biases and concerns in a humorous way.

“By making them a source of laughter, we hope to show how ridiculous they are in a mature way.”

The Sherlock Holmes actor continued: “People should look it up and find out exactly what it is because it's the antidote to the addiction to headline bait that people have with everything these days.”

“This language is saying, 'Hey, this is why we do these things, and in a vacuum you can pick them apart and say they're wrong and bad.

“There used to be an understanding among audiences, and I’m not saying audiences don’t understand anymore — I’m saying things have gotten very confusing.

“(Ben) Stiller’s ethos in directing, casting and filming Tropic Thunder is essentially a condemnation of all these incorrect tropes that have been perpetuated for far too long.”
