Antonio Rudiger and the German Football Association (DFB) are set to take legal action after the defender was linked to a terrorist group.
Rudiger, a devout Muslim, recently posted a photo of himself sitting on a prayer mat wearing a white robe.
As part of his Ramadan greetings, Rudiger pointed to the sky and wrote in the caption of the post: “May the Almighty God accept our fasting and prayers.”
Former Bild editor Julian Reichelt responded to the post on Calling this gesture the 'IS finger'” and viewing the index finger as a clear sign of Islamism. “
After this statement was published, Rudiger has filed a complaint with the Berlin Prosecutor's Office, and the German Football Association has also reported the case to Frankfurt/the Central Office for Combating Cybercrime (ZIT) of the Main Prosecutor's Office.
He declined to comment when asked about it on Monday.
Reichelt doubles down
Despite complaints, which included the DFB referring the post to the prosecutor's office as “hate speech,” Reichelt posted again on Monday night.
He wrote: “This gesture has been fully adopted by terrorists over the past two decades. It has undoubtedly become a greeting to ISIS and Islamist murderers around the world, as well as to those who carried out the murders in Berlin and brought so much to the world Greetings to those suffering disaster and immeasurable pain.
“Anyone who poses like this in public is consciously displaying fanatic greetings rather than an innocent, spiritual gesture. This is the normalization of a horrific ideology that Already taking up too much space in this country.
“And especially because this is about a popular national team player, you should not allow yourself to be intimidated. It must be said that this political ideology goes against our values.
“Terrorists around the world celebrate their murders with the Islamic raised index finger, but that does not belong in Germany. I will never let anyone stop me from saying this.”
The Real Madrid star is currently with the national team preparing to face the Netherlands tonight (Tuesday, March 26).
