“RefCam” will be put into use
Referees for tonight's match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United will wear cameras for the first time in the Premier League.
Jared Gillett will wear a head-mounted camera called RefCam during Monday night's game at Selhurst Park.
While the footage will not be shown live, it will be used in a one-off program providing an insight into Premier League refereeing, which will be broadcast later this year.
This will be the first time a referee in the Premier League will be wearing a camera.
Last year, the Football Association trialled body cameras at adult grassroots football matches with the aim of reducing experiences of abuse by officials at that level.
Referees also wear cameras at other games. In February, Bundesliga referee Daniel Schrager wore a camera and microphone during Frankfurt's 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg.
Crystal Palace and Manchester United will clash tonight at Selhurst Park at 20:00. While the London side have guaranteed their survival in the Premier League for another year, this is an important game for United if they want to keep their chances of European qualification alive.
A victory for the Red Devils would see them in sixth place, just three points behind fifth-placed Spurs.
The fifth-placed team in the Premier League will qualify for next season's Europa League, but sixth-placed will also qualify if City win the FA Cup.
