The animal lover and national treasure also left substantial funds to various other charities.
Paul O'Grady was famous for many things during his long television career, but his for love of dogs The ITV show is probably the project that best reflects his own personality.
The show ran for eleven seasons and centered on Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in south London, with O'Grady proudly serving as an ambassador for the charity.
Now it has been revealed that the TV icon, who died in March last year, set aside up to £500,000 for the charity in his will.
The Liverpudlian had five dogs of his own and set aside £125,000 to care for them after his death.
Known for his generosity throughout his life, O'Grady also donated £50,000 to elephant and orangutan charities – Wildlife SOS and the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre.
The former drag star has donated a further £50,000 to the Salvation Army.
Battersea chief executive Peter Laurie said sun: “Battersea is truly overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the remembrance of our late friend and ambassador Paul in his will.
“This further demonstrates what we know to be true about Paul's life, his unwavering commitment and dedication to helping the thousands of animals that arrive at our center each year.
“Paul works alongside our staff caring for dogs and cats who need our support and he is able to see the unconditional care, support and expertise we provide to help the animals in and around our centre.
“Many of our animals arrive with complex health conditions, some of which may take weeks to find a home; as champions of vulnerable people, we know Paul must have had these in mind when he left his gift to Battersea animal.”
Battersea paid tribute to O'Grady by naming their new veterinary hospital after him last October.
Last December, O'Grady was named PETA's Person of the Year for his “lifelong determination to make the world a kinder place for animals.”
Fans reacted to his generous donation on social media, praising his kindness and “big heart”.
One woman wrote on Facebook: “He was who he was, a genuine man. He had a very kind heart and will always be remembered for his love and kindness towards animals. No one in Battersea Can replace him.”
Another netizen commented: “It's no surprise, he was a sincere and kind man. Even after his death, he continued to help others, especially animals. Leaving a lovely legacy.”
