What a great cast.
Netflix has added a new thriller, dubbed “The Irish Avengers” thanks to its stellar cast from the Emerald Isle.
Land of Saints and Sinners premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September and will be available on Netflix in the UK and Ireland on Friday.
Directed by Robert Lorenz, the cast is a veritable who's who of Irish film and television. The film stars Liam Neeson and also stars Irish Oscar nominees Kerry Condon (Inisherin) and Ciaran Hinds (Belfast), as well as Irish acting World legend Colm Meaney.
Set during the Troubles in Ireland in the 1970s, Land of Saints and Sinners tells the story of Finbar Murphy (Neeson), a man with a dark past, in the remote coastal town of Glencombe. Seal lived a quiet life, far away from political violence. other parts of the country.
But when a group of terrorists arrive, led by Doirian (Condon), Finbarr becomes entangled in an increasingly vicious game of cat and mouse, forcing him to choose between revealing his secret identity and defending his friends and neighbors. Out of choice.
The film is currently ranked number one on Netflix's top ten movies list in the UK.
Other key cast members include Sarah Greene and Jack Gleeson of “Normal People.” While you may not recognize Gleason's name, many will have seen him play one of the greatest villains in television history.
The 31-year-old actor famously played Joffrey Baratheon on Game of Thrones until his character was poisoned in one of the show's most memorable scenes.
“A Land of Saints and Sinners” is his first major return to acting since he announced his retirement ten years ago after losing his “passion” for his career.
With such a stellar Irish cast, some are calling the film an Irish version of The Avengers.
Meaney spoke with Joe about the film last year, saying he had “high hopes” for the film.
He said: “The script is very good. There's Liam (played by Neeson), there's Kerry Condon – my favorite woman in the world – Ciarán Hinds…
“It's a great cast and a great script, so yeah, fingers crossed. High hopes for that.”
The movie lived up to expectations, earning an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Empire magazine, in its review of the film, described it as “a solid, old-fashioned Irish western about what it means to hang up your rifle.”
Meanwhile, the Financial Times compared Neeson to Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, writing that the Irishman was “as strong as ever, playing a character who was 20 years ago and thousands of miles away.” Possible role for Clint Eastwood.”
A Land of Saints and Sinners is now available on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
