Hui ink is named after it was produced in Jixi, Tunxi and Jian counties in ancient Huizhou Prefecture. In addition, it has the characteristics of “hard as jade, silent when grinding, a little bit like lacquer, and remains true for thousands of years”, which is loved by literati. In 2006, Huizhou ink production techniques were included in the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage lists.
The craftsmanship of Hui ink production is complicated, and generally involves more than a dozen processes such as refining tobacco, selecting tobacco, mixing glue, pounding the rod, inserting the mold, pressing the bag, drying the ink, repairing the ink, polishing, and tracing the gold. Today, in Huangshan City, Anhui Province, a group of Hui ink artists still guard the ancient ink-making method of “thousands of hammers and pestles, and an ingot of Hui ink is initially formed”. They pass on the ancient culture with exquisite craftsmanship and make Hui ink famous in the world. Shining in inheritance and development. Photo by Wu Sunmin (People’s Picture Network)
