Cruise operator praised for move
Passengers on a cruise ship were sent a warning letter before the ship docked in a popular tourist destination in Mexico.
The captain of the Carnival cruise ship wrote the letter to those on the ship before arriving in Ensenada.
The letter provides passengers with “important” advice from the cruise operator about the city.
It reads: “As you prepare for our visit to Ensenada, we have an important tip.
“You may encounter restaurants/attractions in the Port of Ensenada (not associated with the ship's shore excursion program) that allow you to touch or otherwise interact with tiger cubs. For public health, safety, and environmental reasons, Carnival recommends that you Do not attend such attractions, including but not limited to tiger cub attractions.
“Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Have a nice day ashore.”
The letter was signed by Captain Eduardo Ferrone.
After the news was shared on the u/OMGLMAOWTF_com Reddit subreddit, people commented that petting tiger cubs isn't just something tourists can do in Ensenada.
One person said “the same goes for Cabo,” explaining that they were told the animals were “drugged to keep them docile.”
They added: “We never actually saw them but were warned multiple times. It's really sad.”
Someone else wrote: “It's all true. I stayed in Ensenada for a year and became friends with the barista next to Tiger Club and she gave me the full rundown.”
Many praised the cruise operator for discouraging tourists from attending the event and encouraging trade.
One person commented: “This is a big step in the right direction, I wish they would mention captive dolphins and whales as well as the way animals are treated in Mexico can be quite cruel. Seeing these beautiful creatures for It’s heartbreaking to be restricted by convenience.”
A second said: “I really appreciate the sentiment, I just wish they would also talk about animal welfare as a reason not to participate.”
