It would be worse than Nottingham Forest and Everton

Chelsea could face a “more serious” points deduction than Nottingham Forest and Everton if they are found to have breached Financial Fair Play regulations.

The Blues' spending has caught everyone's attention, spending more than £1bn on new players since the 2022 takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Under the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, clubs cannot lose more than £105m over three years.

Forest and Everton were both found guilty of rule violations and had points deducted. The former was deducted 4 points and is currently in the relegation zone, while Everton's points were reduced from 10 points to 6 points after a successful appeal.

Mauricio Pochettino's side are yet to be charged but may have to offload a number of high-earning players to balance the books at Stamford Bridge, especially given they are likely to miss out on European football for a second consecutive season.

Finance expert Stefan Poulsen believes Chelsea could face a bigger points deduction than what both teams have already been punished for.

He told TalkSPORT: “Probably more serious than Forest and Everton.

“I think the scale of damage they are forecasting at the moment seems to me to be well beyond Everton and Nottingham Forest.”

Explaining Chelsea's situation, he said: “There is an assumption about Mason Mount because (his sale) was announced on the Manchester United website on July 1 that it has been included in the current season.

“So £55m of profit is for this season. It now looks like Mason Mount have done a deal for 2022/23 and that's how they're going to get through (FFP rules).”
