Liverpool fans may not be familiar with this name.

New favorites have emerged to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool at the end of the season after Xavi Alonso committed to staying at Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso is considered a strong contender to replace Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool boss next season and it now appears he will remain as coach of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen for at least another season.

While many fans will assume that Brighton and Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi will now be the club's top target, it appears that another name from further afield could be the man to succeed the German.

39-year-old Ruben Amorim is the current first-team coach of Sporting Lisbon, currently ranked first in the Portuguese Serie A.

The former Benfica and Portugal international midfielder took over Sporting CP in 2020 and led the club to a TACA and La Liga double, ending the latter's 19-year league title drought.

Amorim's high-pressing style is very similar to how Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool currently operate – as is Sporting CP's pace and directness of play.

Liverpool have an in-depth understanding of the Portuguese market, with coaches Pep Lijnders, Vitor Matos and former sporting director Julian Ward all having good connections and connections there, so they will have the knowledge of Amor. Lin's wealth of information and his talents could have selected any other potential candidate.

Alonso has so far been the favorite to replace Klopp, favored by most fans as a club legend.

However, reports out of Germany suggest Alonso will remain in the country and continue his successful reign at Bayer Leverkusen, and is therefore no longer on Liverpool's summer shortlist.

Alonso seems to want to stay at Leverkusen and continue his incredible project, which is still in its infancy and is poised to make history.

It's not just in the Bundesliga that the club can win the treble and remain unbeaten in all competitions.

Liverpool fans on social media seemed quick to take in the news about Alonso and expressed their support for the Portuguese outsider.
