Karl Wallinger, who performed on The Waterboys' hit “The Whole of the Moon,” has died at the age of 66.
The Welsh-born musician and songwriter, who was also the lead singer of solo project World Party, died on Sunday.
The cause of death has not been released.
Paying tribute to Wallinger, Waterboys frontman Mike Scott described him as “one of the best musicians I've ever known.”
He wrote: “Have a great time, my old friend. You are one of the finest musicians I have ever known.”
According to the BBC, the virtuoso joined the Waterboys in 1983 and played multiple instruments on their second and third albums.
This included a performance of the band's hit single “The Whole of the Moon,” which became one of the biggest hits of the 1980s.
After leaving the band in 1985, he released music from 1986 to 2000 under the name World Party. During this time, he also worked on Sinéad O'Connor's 1987 debut album.
Wallinger also wrote “She's the One,” which became a No. 1 single in 1999 when Robbie Williams covered the song.
In a post on social media, Wallinger's daughter Nancy Zammit described him as a “musical giant.”
