He will join the club “next season”
West Ham United have reportedly identified the man they want to succeed David Moyes as the club's manager.
On Sunday, reports emerged that West Ham United had decided to part ways with the Scottish manager. Earlier, the Hammers suffered a 5-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Now, Fabrizio Romano reports that the east London side have agreed a deal with Julen Lopetegui to replace Moyes from next season.
He wrote on #WHUFC The proposal is ready to enter the formal stage. Details are being finalized and then a contract will be signed, but the agreement is in place. “
The Spaniard has previously played for Sevilla, where he won the Europa League, and served as head coach of the Spanish national team.
Most recently, he was manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, leading the team to a 13th-place finish last season. However, he left in the summer amid concerns over the club's financial situation.
For Moyes, his imminent departure from West Ham marks a disappointing end to his second term at the club.
The 61-year-old has been West Ham United coach since 2019 and led the club to qualify for the 2021 Europa League.
After reaching the semi-finals of the competition, Moyes led West Ham to win the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League title the following season, their first European trophy since 1965.
However, most West Ham fans have called for Moyes to leave this season, with many dissatisfied with his style of football.
Their form has also dipped significantly in recent weeks, with West Ham winning just one of their last nine league games.
