This discovery gives historians an insight into how our ancestors lived.

Archaeologists have discovered an entire Iron Age village on a remote, uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland.

Hertha is the largest island in the St Kilda archipelago off the northwest coast of Scotland.

It is one of the most remote corners of Britain, abandoned by humans in the 1930s due to its rugged landscape and high winds.

Before that, it had been occupied by various settlers and creatures for more than two thousand years.

In recent years, the island has become a hotspot for archaeologists curious to discover new information about the ancient civilizations that once roamed its peaks and valleys.

Researchers from Guard Archeology conducted multiple excavations on the island between 2017 and 2019, and published their findings in 2021.

Research has uncovered countless artifacts, artwork, and even evidence of the food that previous settlers consumed while living on the island.

Pottery fragments have been found on Hertha, suggesting that the island was permanently inhabited by a group of people at one time or another over the centuries.

Traces of carbonized food were found on the pottery, and radiocarbon dating allowed researchers to date the settlers to between 400 BC and 100 BC.

Although experts are convinced that people lived permanently on the island, no evidence of housing structures has been found.

A small collection of pottery is thought to be from the Bronze Age, suggesting the island may have been inhabited as early as 20,000 BC.

In a press release on the Guard Archeology website, Alan Hunter Blair, who is in charge of the excavations, said: “Recent archaeological work has shown that the eastern end of St Kilda Village Bay was under iron The period was quite densely occupied, although no house structures have been found.

He added: “The presence of a large amount of Iron Age pottery at the site suggests there must have been a settlement nearby.”

“One of the most important issues facing archaeologists working in St Kilda is the demolition and clearing of earlier buildings in order to build new ones using the old stone as a building resource.

“Stones have also been removed, including those from burials, to increase the area available for farming, leaving few traces of what might have previously been there. Given that the site is located on extensively used and landscaped land, all of the areas recently surveyed The fact that the archaeological remains have survived is remarkable.

“The remote St Kilda island group has not been immune to change, but understanding what remains gives us a more detailed look at the lives of its past inhabitants.”

St Kilda Islands is a UNESCO Designated as a World Heritage Site.

The island group is located 64 kilometers west of the Outer Hebrides and is all that remains of an eroded volcano that was active during plate tectonics and the formation of the North Atlantic. 55 million years ago.

The excavation site is located southwest of the main island of Hilta, overlooking Village Bay.
