The hiker was taking photos on the opposite shore when he thought he saw a large fish beneath the surface.

A tourist believed he saw the mysterious creature while visiting the famous Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands.

Steve Challice, from Southampton, was on holiday with his brother when they decided to visit Urquhart Castle, located on the shores of the famous lake.

At one point during their scenic walk, Steve stopped to take some photos of the opposite coastline, when he seemed to witness unusually large movement underwater.

He said log It was only later, when he looked back at the photos, that he realized how strange and unusual the sight was.

“I started taking a few pictures and then this big fish came to the surface and then sank again,” he said.

“It only appears in one shot, which is a bit of a fluke to be honest. As you can see from the last photo, I looked at it for a while but didn't see it again.

Steve estimated the creature was about 8 feet long and when he discovered the mysterious image he decided to post it online.

Within days, the post was flooded with comments from people insisting the “snapped” entity was indeed the elusive Loch Ness Monster.

Steve himself didn't believe it.

“My guess is that what I caught was a catfish or something like that. I would hope that's what happens when seals come in from the sea, which would explain why these sightings are so rare.”

A digital photography expert has criticized claims from online crowds that the photo looks altered due to color saturation and blurry lining of the supposed animal in the main image.

Steve's suspicions were challenged by Roland Watson, who runs the Loch Ness Mystery Blog.

Rowland contacted Steve after seeing his post on social media and told him “If this was a real photo of the Loch Ness creature, it would easily be in the top three of all time.”

Steve's photo is one of a number of claims in recent years that Loch Ness's mysterious beast does indeed exist.

Last August, a team of researchers claimed to have captured the “first video” of the Loch Ness monster using a thermal imaging drone.

The photo apparently shows a large animal on the shores of the famous lake, which experts said at the time could be the Loch Ness Monster.

It was captured at night using thermal drone technology – as part of a massive hunt for the elusive creature in Scotland.

Production company Dragonfly Films used thermal imaging technology as part of the hunt and believe they may have captured the Loch Ness monster near the coast.

Tim Whittard, producer of the project, said at the time: “These thermal drones allow us to see the lake in infrared.

“With this device, we are able to see immediately if an animal breaks the surface of the water.

“This thermal imaging technology has been available for several years, and it's worth noting that no one has yet deployed such equipment to investigate this mystery.

“It did detect an unusual heat signature on a thermal imaging drone – a large object near the coast.”

The footage will be included in an episode of the TV series Weird Britain Produced by Dragonfly Films.

It is expected to air on UK television and be released online later this year.
