The first details about the attackers and victims have been released.
A widely circulated video shows a brave member of the public trying to fight off a man who stabbed several people during an attack at a Sydney shopping center on Saturday afternoon (April 13).
The attack took place at the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall in the Australian city, leaving at least six victims dead and “many others” injured.
Sky News Australia reported that among the dead was the mother of a nine-month-old baby, who was also stabbed in the incident and was undergoing surgery.
Meanwhile, New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb said four women and one man were killed at a shopping center and another woman died in hospital.
She also said they believed the attacker was a 40-year-old man. His identity has not yet been released.
At an earlier press conference, NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cook said: “Around 3.10pm this afternoon a man walked into Westfield Bandi Junction.
“He left the center shortly after and returned at around 3.20pm. As he walked through the center he interacted with approximately nine people. It was clear that during that engagement he used the weapon he was carrying Stabbed by those we thought.”

He added: “Soon a police inspector, who was nearby, was directed by a group of people into the centre.
“She confronted the offender, who by this time was at Level 5, while continuing to walk quickly behind him to catch up to him.
“He turned to face her and raised a knife. She fired and the man is now deceased.”
In a video of the scene shared on social media, a female police officer can be seen performing CPR on the victim.
The assistant commissioner said the officer's actions saved “many lives”.
Another widely shared video from the scene captured the moment a brave member of the public tried to fight off his attacker using a metal pole.
The attacker can be seen in the video holding a type of blade, as shown below.
