Palmer was speechless.
Tim Sherwood has been accused of making things awkward during his post-match interview with Chelsea player Cole Palmer.
Sherwood, who works at the Astro Stadium, spoke to the youngster following Chelsea's 3-2 win over Newcastle United on Monday night.
Palmer scored and provided an assist to help the Blues take the pressure off Mauricio Pochettino.
In a year when there wasn't much to write home about, Palmer brought excitement to Stamford Bridge but was shocked by Sherwood's scathing assessment of his team-mates.
“All you need are some players to play with,” Sherwood said – to Palmer's expression of awkward silence.
“I know you can't say that, but that's what I say. I just think you need more quality around you,” the former Spurs boss continued.
“For me, (Pochettino) needs to build a team around you – with the qualities you have, but once he finds the right players it will open up some transfer windows.”
The former Manchester City player then responded: “It's not just me, we have a lot of other players. Hopefully the team can be more united than what everyone sees.”
After listening to the interview, many fans thought Sherwood went a little too far and praised Palmer for the way the 21-year-old handled the interview.
“Oh, that's a shameless thing to say. Are you okay, Tim?” one user said.
A second added: “Sherwood's comments are shocking! Great job for Palmer to stand up for his team-mates.
“I can't believe this was allowed… It's just horrible punditry and incredibly disrespectful. Palmer is young and is in trouble for making disturbing comments. No one should have to Pay or give Sherwood any time to become an expert or analyst. Totally unprofessional…” commented a third.
Another wrote: “Whether this is right or wrong (debatable), this is a very dishonest question and could get Palmer into a lot of trouble if he gets his words mixed up. Tim Hee Poor Wood.
“Palmer deserves credit for standing up for his teammates,” said a fifth.
Palmer has impressed in front of England bosses – but will it be enough?
Palmer once again earned plaudits for Chelsea's victory last night.
Under the watchful eye of England coach Gareth Southgate, he contributed 19 goals and one assist in 24 league games.
Many have called for the youngster to be included in the Three Lions' squad for the upcoming European Championships, given his performances in an underperforming side.
With one international break remaining and the squad due to be announced on Thursday, this could be Southgate's last chance to assess his readiness.
It's worth noting that while Palmer is a genuine talent and the latest on England's conveyor belt, the position he plays is also brimming with talent.
The likes of Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and James Maddison are likely to be ahead of him in the No. 10 position. There is even talk that he could play on the wing, but again, there are three or four players ahead of them.
Don't get me wrong, this is a huge luxury for Southgate and if he doesn't go this summer his time will come quickly, but it feels like even if he continues this form it will be very difficult. It's hard to see him getting ahead of the trusted, loyal players Southgate likes.
