Make sure you don't make these mistakes

You either already own one or you've heard that everyone has one—either way, it's hard to avoid air fryer chat these days.

Air fryers have been hailed as the best thing since sliced bread, and air fryer owners would have you believe that purchasing the appliance was the best decision they've made in the last five years.

To be fair, it's easy to see why. You can cook a variety of foods with them, which is a healthier alternative to frying food in oil, and they're more energy-efficient than ovens.

But it turns out that air fryers have limited capabilities, and there are some foods that should never be cooked in an air fryer.

Food experts Alisa Burt and Samuel Goldsmith reveal that some ingredients in popular foods don't mix well with the air fryer.

They’ve compiled a list of do’s and don’ts for air fryer owners.

Writing for BBC Good Food, they say the first thing you shouldn't put into the appliance is anything with wet batter on it.

This includes foods like fried chicken, for several reasons. First, you're unlikely to get the results you want because there won't be enough hot oil to solidify the batter.

This also means it can get really messy and drip onto the air fryer. Alison also explains that “a puddle of batter can also burn the bottom of the air fryer basket.”

The same logic applies to anything covered in sauce, so basically anything with liquid ingredients should not go into the air fryer.

For dishes like stews, bolognese and chili con carne, it's best to use a slow cooker or traditional pots and pans.

In addition to causing a mess, there are safety risks as hot liquids can spurt and splash, possibly causing severe burns.

Any food that should be boiled or steamed, such as pasta and rice, should not be air fried, and Samuel says you should use an old-fashioned stove and oven to cook these foods.

Popcorn may surprise you. Apparently, most air fryers don't get hot enough to pop the corn kernels, which can also get stuck inside the device and cause a short circuit, posing a fire hazard.

While some vegetables produce cracked results when cooked in the air fryer, broccoli is not one of them.

Since vegetables have a hard time retaining moisture, it may dry out in the air fryer, making it chewy and bitter.

Finally, boiled eggs. If you try to air fry an egg, you may end up finding it chewy and rubbery (you'll also want to take a close look at yourself if you choose to do this).
