Already completely cut off

Being able to live alone is the dream of many young people, but what about living alone on an uninhabited island?

Well, for those who are in the market, this is the place.

The only known structure on Elizaj, a hard-to-reach island off the south coast of Iceland, is a rather bizarre-looking house.

This house has been called “the loneliest house in the world” and it's understandable why.

The house has no running water, indoor plumbing or electricity, but it does come with a sauna thanks to a rainwater harvesting system.

There are various theories as to the purpose of the house, with some claiming that the Icelandic government gave the house to Björk, others believing it was the billionaire's escape plan in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

However, the truth is much more commonplace.

The building was actually built in the 1950s by the Elliðaey Hunting Association. The island is famous for its puffin population and is also a hotspot for hunters.

It provides some shelter and a base for hunters, and according to Travel, the journey to get there is quite dangerous.

“The island must first be reached by boat from the nearest island,” the outlet reported. “Like many cruise ships on Icelandic waters, the journey to the island is characterized by frigid temperatures and sometimes terrifying waves.

“While the journey itself can be scary and uncomfortable, getting to the island is even scarier.

“People have to jump from the boat to the steep side of the island and hold on to a rope attached to the island. If not done correctly, falling into the icy water is inevitable.

“After successfully jumping and grabbing the rope, you need to use the rope to climb this steep section to the top of the island.”

So, if you really want to live in such isolation, be aware that the price you pay will be a journey and a half before you reach your destination.
