Only one 'incredible player' is guaranteed a spot

Sir Alex Ferguson says only one player is guaranteed a place in his all-time Manchester United XI.

In his 26 years as Manchester United manager, Ferguson won it all and had some very good players to help him conquer football over the years.

Talents such as Eric Cantona, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo are just a few of the world-class players he has at his disposal.

When the legendary Scot announced his retirement in 2013, he was asked to name his all-time Manchester United XI, however, he was convinced that only one player would make the squad.

He told Welt am Sonntag at the time: “People ask you: 'Who do you think is the best Manchester United team?' It's absolutely impossible.

“It's absolutely impossible. You look at the forwards I have, going back to (Brian) McClair, (Mark) Hughes, (Andy) Cole, Cantona, (Ruud) Ruud van Nistelrooy, (Louis) Saha, Solskjaer, (Dwight) Yorke, Teddy Sheringham.

“Then there are the current players – Wayne Rooney, (Robin) Van Persie, Pepper (Javier Hernandez). How do you sort through that? Maybe Cantona and others?

“The midfield is probably a little easier because you have (Roy) Keane, (Bryan) Robson and Scholes – who are all good players – and (David) Beckham, Ronaldo and (Ryan) Giggs.

“Honestly, I'd say Dennis Irving would be the only guy who makes the team. I'd call him an eight out of ten.

“In a game at Highbury he passed the ball back very badly in the last minute and then (Dennis) Bergkamp came on and scored.

“After the game, the media said: ‘You must be disappointed with that pass back.’ I said: ‘Well, it’s not bad to make a mistake once in ten years. “He's an unbelievable player.”

During his 12 years at Manchester United, Owen played 468 times for Manchester United and won 7 Premier League championships, a Champions League championship, two FA Cup championships and a League Cup championship.
