They were deducted points because they were in arrears with transfer fees to other clubs for the 2022/23 season.

Sheffield United were deducted two points, which will take effect the next time they participate in a league match hosted by the EFL.

The Independent Disciplinary Committee has determined that the decision relates to a transfer payment default.

The club will be deducted another two points before the end of the same season.

According to The Guardian , further deductions have been suspended until the end of the season and will be triggered if United default on any money owed to another club under a transfer or compensation agreement for more than five working days.

United were promoted from the Championship last year but are expected to be relegated this year as they are nine points below safety.

The news comes after confirmation that Everton will also be deducted a further points.

The second penalty left the club in 16th place in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone.

Everton were handed a 10-point penalty in November last year for breaching PSR regulations towards the end of the 2021-22 season. That number was reduced to six in February following an appeal by the club.

Goodison Park confirmed in a statement that they would appeal against the second points deduction.

They said: “Everton were charged by the Premier League in January 2024 for breaching permissible profit and sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23.

“The matter has been referred to the Premier League Committee, who have today announced that Everton will be docked two points with immediate effect. While the club's position is that no further sanctions will be taken, the club is pleased to see the committee respond to the majority of the issues raised by the club. The recognition, including the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances faced by the club due to the war in Ukraine and the high level of cooperation that resulted in early recognition of the club's breach of contract.

“Everton remain committed to working with the league on all matters relating to the PSR but are extremely concerned about the inconsistency in points deductions by different committees.

“The club would like to express its gratitude to the Supporters Advisory Committee and other fans groups for their submissions during this process and would like to thank all Evertonians for their continued patience and generous support.

“The club and its legal representatives have begun preparations to appeal against the committee's decision.”
