The incident occurred after the game
A Serie A manager has been sacked after head-butting an opposition player after a game.
Lecce coach Roberto Daviza head-butted Hellas Verona's Thomas Henry shortly after the final whistle as Greece won 1-0.
Footage showed Daviza headbutting the striker before being sent off. Henry was also sent off with a red card.
The 48-year-old admitted his behavior was “inexcusable” and Lecce condemned his actions.
He told Sky Sport Italia: “I went into the pitch and tried to stop my players from getting sent off because Verona challenged us a lot in the final moments of the game and after the final whistle.”
“This is not a good thing, I know it. It is inexcusable and I have explained my behavior to Verona. I did not play to do this.”
Lecce confirmed the news in a brief statement on Monday, which said: “Following the incident at the end of Lecce's match against Verona, Lecce USA announces that it has sacked head coach Daversa. position. Thanks to coach and his staff for the job they do.”
The Italian side's defeat leaves them 15th in Serie A, two places above Verona and just one point off the bottom three as the relegation battle heats up.
