They were hung upside down for nearly an hour.
A horrifying video of a ride malfunctioning at Canada's Wonderland theme park in Vaughan, Ontario, which left passengers hanging upside down for 45 minutes, has gone viral.
The incident took place on the Lumberjack ride at the popular amusement park, and the video was captured and uploaded by Jiashira Rivera, who witnessed the tragic incident from the ground.
The Lumberjack is described on the park's website as “an axe-wielding ride that propels riders skyward in a 360-degree loop with their feet in the air.”
It continued: “Face-to-face seating allows guests to interact with each other and see the fear on their friends' faces.”
The words took on even more literal meaning as the unfortunate guests looked at each other's faces with horror for more than half an hour.
Rivera's footage shows the ride becoming “upside-down” and stuck upward at an angle of 180°C.
@jiashira_ About 45 minutes later they got everyone down safely 🫠😮💨 I will definitely not be taking this ride anytime soon! #canadaswonderland #canada #toronto #amusementpark #ridegetsstuck #scary #wtf #viral #fyp ♬ Original Sound – Shira 🦂
One rider on the ride described how many people on the ride began crying in fear and had tears flowing back into their eyes due to the ride's location.
Spencer Parkhouse, 11, said he initially thought the ride's sudden stop was part of the experience.
But when they looked down and saw the ambulance parked dozens of feet below them, they knew something was wrong.
“(I was) just feeling – when are we going to fall? Are we going to fall?” he told CBC News.
He added: “(I'm) just feeling – when are we going to fall? Are we going to fall?”
Even if engineers get the ride back up and running after about 30 minutes, the attraction still has to perform its loop for safety reasons, so all the terrified passengers can't get off immediately.
A park spokesman later confirmed that both riders were evaluated for chest pain before being released.
They added: “Guests were safely removed from the vehicle and assessed by emergency personnel before being released back to the park.”
“The safety of our guests is always our top priority.”
Some users on TikTok expressed shock at the video. One netizen wrote: “This is basically torture.”
Another netizen shared a similar experience: “In the early 1980s, my mother was stood upside down for 3 hours. I was born five years later and she never took me to a theme park in her life!!”
