“It's good to have some fights with some people.”

Roy Keane has mocked his former Manchester United team-mate Gary Neville for using a commonly used phrase when discussing England under Gareth Southgate.

Keane and Neville are discussing Kobe Manu's England call-up with Ian Wright and Gil Scott. stick to football, when the team’s energy is boosted. “I have to say,” Neville said, “the England dressing room seems to be in good spirits right now…”

At that point, Keane's facial expression suggested Neville was talking about a topic he likes to broach. Sensing a change in the mood in the room, Wright joked: “Good boy!”

“About two or three years ago, weren't there players fighting in the canteen, punching each other? Who was that? Joe Gomez and (Raheem) Sterling, yeah.

“We all have battles with people. Sometimes that needs to happen. It's good to have a few quarrels with some people. Let's not think England are all best friends with each other, yeah. Jesus!”

Roy Keane refers to England training camp incident in 2019

The incident Roy Keane mentioned involved Joe Gomez (Liverpool) and Raheem Sterling, requiring Jordan Henderson to calm things down and prevent his former team-mate from leaving the international training camp.

As early as 2019, Gomez and Sterling, who was playing for Manchester City at the time, had an altercation in the England training camp. Gomez was with a group of players when Sterling entered the team canteen.

Gomez is believed to have said something that prompted Sterling to respond: “You think you're a big deal now?”

The incident was a continuation of an on-field clash the day before, when the players' clubs faced off against each other in the Premier League. Sterling reportedly approached Gomez and put his hands around the back of Gomez's neck, prompting an angry reaction from the Liverpool defender. England teammates rushed forward to separate the two men, with then-Liverpool captain Henderson “acting as the peacemaker”.

Of course, Sterling is a former Liverpool player and there are some residual, bitter feelings about his move to Manchester City. The move took place in 2015, with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard saying he was “disappointed” with Sterling.
