former Top grade Star believes that the electric vehicle industry is not growing as fast as everyone thinks.
Richard Hammond predicts that most cars will still run on petrol within twenty-five years, despite the introduction of an increasing number of electric models.
The broadcaster and car enthusiast believes China's decision to retain vital minerals is hampering the growth of the electric vehicle industry.
talking telegraph, The 54-year-old said: “Electric vehicles will be part of the future, of course they are. But at the current rate of electrification, even if we can keep it up – we can’t because China is withholding the rare earths we need Minerals – By 2050, the majority of cars on the road will still be, and must be, internal combustion engines.”
Speaking about his new podcast, he commented, who are we nowwhich he co-hosts with his daughter.
It launched in February and focuses on men, mental health, racing and cancel culture.
In the opening episode, Hammond revealed that his 23-year-old daughter Izzy had already clocked 13,000 miles in her first year behind the wheel as she relied on the car for transportation while living in the countryside.
He also claimed that there is a gap in the television industry for programming about autonomous driving and electric vehicles, as he believes the public does not know enough about the topic.
“The biggest financial decision we make as individuals that has an impact on our carbon future is cars,” he said.
“People may end up buying electric cars that are simply not suitable for their application, or they may not buy electric cars when they are perfect. But we are not properly informed.
“There needs to be a show now that says, 'Listen, you need to move around and how to do that is an important decision, so here's what you need to know.'” Someone should do that. “
Hammond co-hosted Top Gear from 2002 to 2015, alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May. The trio then hosted The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime until this year.
In 2017, while filming the second season of the Amazon Prime show, Hammond fell off a motorcycle and hit his head, leaving him unconscious.
He also made headlines in 2006 after he was involved in a life-threatening crash while driving a jet car at 320 mph. He was in a coma for more than two weeks.
Hammond's daughter Izzy spoke about her recovery experience in an episode of the podcast.
