It can inspire any team to go all the way.
Pubs across the UK, which are currently allowed to stay open until 11pm, could extend their opening hours to 1am if England or Scotland reach the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
Home Secretary James Cleverly announced the measure to boost the hospitality industry and boost national sentiment ahead of the major sporting event, which kicks off in Munich on Friday 14 June.
Gareth Southgate's side will be hoping to erase the bad memories of Euro 2020, when they narrowly lost to Italy on penalties in the final.
Steve Clarke's Scotland are underdogs heading into the tournament after a tough qualifying campaign. They will advance to Group A, which also faces Germany, Hungary and Switzerland.
Pubs see Euro 2020 in the summer of 2021 as a savior during the coronavirus lockdown.
Mr Cleverley said he hoped the new incentive would have a similar impact on pubs across the country.
Announcing the news, he said: “We have listened to the public through consultation and will extend pub licensing if England or Scotland reach the semi-finals or finals of Euro 2024.
“The hospitality industry’s boost will allow friends, families and communities to come together for longer and watch their country hopefully take it home.”
The plan will be submitted to parliament today to ensure there is enough time for debate before the first game in just over a month's time.
Unfortunately for Scotland fans, the law only applies to businesses in England and Wales, so if Scotland make it to the competition semi-finals, members of the Tartan Army will have to venture south of the border to take advantage of the additional two hours of celebration time.
Scottish licensing authorities act independently of UK legislation in such cases and there is currently no indication whether they will follow suit.
The British government has previously postponed pub closing times for the royal wedding, the Queen's 90th birthday in 2016, the 2014 World Cup and the final European Cup final in 2022.
Calls for a similar move to mark the 2023 Women's World Cup final between England and Spain have been rejected by ministers because it would require a recall of Parliament.
