Guess that makes a lot of us
True crime is one of the biggest genres in the world, but now a mental health expert has warned that if you're one of the millions of people who love it, you might just be a psychopath.
Yes, guys, if you like true crime, that's a big red flag to raise.
More specifically, mental health expert Dr. Thelma Bryant explains that violent media may be viewed for specific reasons.
She said: “If your idea of relaxing before bed is to watch three episodes of Law & Order, then I would encourage you to think 'Why is trauma relaxing for me'?
“Some of us grew up in high-stress environments, so people mistake calm for boring. To get back to yourself, you have to face the discomfort because it can feel alien.”
Many social media users have since expressed their reasons for watching the true crime episode.
One person said: “It distracts me from the pain in my life. I don't like it and it just distracts from my anger.” A second added: “This trauma doesn't make me relax – it's the character Or justice that real people often get, and I’ve never done that in my own life.”
A third wrote: “Damn. This really hits home. I've seen a lot of messed up shit on TV before but I've been so hard on myself over the past two years that I can't watch it anymore.”
