The changes will take effect at the beginning of next season.
The Premier League announced that all 20 clubs voted unanimously to introduce semi-automatic offside technology, effective from the 2024/2025 season.
In a statement released by the Premier League, the organization said the new technology will “provide faster and more consistent virtual offside line placement”.
The statement read: “At today's Premier League Shareholders' Meeting, clubs unanimously agreed to introduce semi-automatic offside technology.”
“The new system will be used for the first time in next season’s Premier League, with the technology expected to be ready for introduction after the autumn international break.
“The technology will place virtual offside lines faster and more consistently, based on optical player tracking, and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.”
Currently, offside calls in relation to goals are double-checked by VAR officials, but there have been complaints about the timing of the checks and the lack of clarity about what happened.
These changes are designed to ensure efficiency and clarity in decision-making so teams don’t feel they’ve been wronged by a decision.
