It's not what you think…
Spam is something of a staple of the British diet. However, people were shocked when they discovered what this ubiquitous four-letter word actually means.
Canned ground meat mix was first introduced in 1937 by the food company Hormel Foods.
Since then, it has become an icon of modern life.
Made from pork, water, salt, potato starch, sugar and sodium nitrate, this canned product is often scorned by many cooking enthusiasts.
For others, however, the yellow and blue packaging holds fond memories of childhood and homemade lunches.
Despite being such a big brand, it turns out not many people know where the name comes from.
“On a whim, I bought canned meat,” one person wrote online. “When I tasted it for the first time, I understood that SPAM stands for Salt Preserves Any Meat.”
A second agreed with their theory: “What does SPAM stand for? A piece of salty meat?”
“I've often guessed 'spam' is short for 'stale ham,'” joked a third.
However, for anyone reading this, the mystery is now over.
The word SPAM is actually a portmanteau of “spiced ham.” Makes sense, right?
According to Time magazine, the name came up during a naming contest by actor Ken Daigneau, the brother of a Hormel executive.
