Scholes has an interesting theory
Paul Scholes believes he knows what Anthony said to Mason Mount and Andre Onana as they walked off the pitch together.
All three were part of the United side that were humiliated by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Michael Olise and Jean-Philippe Mateta gave the Eagles a well-deserved 2-0 lead in the first half, with Olise's wonder striker Tyrik Mitchell ensuring the win over Crystal Palace in the second half It was an unforgettable night.
It was yet another poor performance for the Red Devils, who are now in real danger of not qualifying for European competition at all.
Three were spotted discussing the game
Throughout the game, cameras captured discussions between Anthony, Mount and Onana, with the Brazilian possibly covering his mouth with his hands as he spoke to the pair to avoid the cameras picking up what he was saying.
Mount walked beside him, drawing a frustrated figure, while Onana also covered his mouth and spoke.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher lambasted the trio live on air, saying: “Get off the pitch. Talking, whispering behind your back – you're just terrible. They were probably talking about one of the players – Everyone else, the team or the head coach, just shut up and get in there.
“You guys got beaten 0-4. Whispering, talking about other players. It was embarrassing, to be honest.”
Scholes thinks he knows what's going on
Scholes, who was working as a pundit for Optus Sports, noticed Anthony holding up three fingers, leading him to speculate that this may have played a role in the conversation.
“He had three fingers in there and I don't know what that meant. He said something to Mason Mount that he obviously wasn't happy with. Mason Mount seemed to be the quietest of the three of them,” he said .
“What can that do, I didn't see any communication from them on the football pitch. That doesn't look good. I don't think it's a good thing for the manager.
“People are obviously talking about things that he (Anthony) doesn't agree with. When he raised three fingers, maybe he was saying we should deploy three people in the midfield, why don't we deploy three people there?
“I don't know, we don't know because we can't lip-read. But obviously there's a problem and they obviously don't agree with what the manager is doing.”
Manchester United's slim hopes of qualifying for Europe face an even bigger obstacle this weekend when they face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday in a must-win game with Arsenal still likely to win the Premier League title.
