At around 5 pm on April 25, with the temperature approaching 30 degrees, the electric tricycle returned to the door of the Community Service Hall on Zhongxin Street after a day of running. Liu Binjie took off her red vest, drank a glass of water, and began to organize her work account for the day.

Center Street Community is located in the center of Chengguan Town, Yucheng County, Henan Province. It is called the “CBD of the old city” by young people. This year is Liu Binjie’s 22nd year working in the community, and her 6th year as a grid member. Visiting, entering households, and recording records are tasks she performs almost every day.

What's new today?

“The old lady in the front house has moved away, and a new household has arrived.” The clock was turned back to 7:30 in the morning, and an enthusiastic resident living on Wenming Road called to share the “news” in the alley. At around 8 o'clock, the regular community meeting ended. Liu Binjie and her colleague Yang Pin drove an electric tricycle to the new residents' homes.

“Have you eaten?” “Just eat!” After a few words of greeting, there was a small grid in Liu Binjie's notebook for a family of four: freelance, two children, who come to the county to go to school. On the hand-drawn grid diagram, traces of alteration are vaguely visible. Today, there are 312 households with 1,123 people in the second grid she is responsible for. Before leaving, Liu Binjie left her contact information, “call me anytime if you need anything.”

How many people would seek help from a grid officer when something goes wrong?

“Sister, my mother is alone at home and hasn't answered the phone. Can you go and have a look?” At around 10 a.m., Liu Binjie interrupted her visit plan. The caller was Grandma Ding’s daughter. In recent years, after experiencing the death of her husband and cerebral infarction, Grandma Ding's body has become worse than before, and her daughter can't worry about her when she goes to work.

“Good girl, why are you here again?” Grandma Ding was surprised and puzzled when she heard Liu Binjie knocking on the door anxiously in the yard. Fortunately, she just didn't hear the call and the crisis was averted.

There are currently 13 elderly people like Grandma Ding living alone in the Central Street community. There are 4 people in the second grid that Liu Binjie is responsible for: 97-year-old Grandma Fu, who is fairly mobile, but her ears are not very good; 80-year-old Grandma Song Hemiplegic and sitting in a wheelchair… Liu Binjie always thinks of them first during daily visits and holiday condolences.

Who else is the grid member thinking about every day?

There are 119 shops in the grid that Liu Binjie is responsible for, and tracking the safety concerns of these shops is also one of her daily tasks. This work is inseparable from a self-made “artifact”: a retractable clothes drying rod with half a mineral water bottle tied to the top. Liu Binjie said that according to fire protection requirements, business premises must be equipped with smoke alarms. “Some businesses don't pretend to be troublesome, and some pretend to be irregular and need our help.”

In a pharmacy, Liu Binjie and Yang Pin collaborated to demonstrate the use of the “artifact”: apply glue on one side of the smoke alarm, hold the other side with the “artifact”, push it up to the ceiling, and fix it. Check the pressure and date of the fire extinguisher, check whether the safety emergency lights are installed correctly, check for gas and circuit safety hazards… It is already evening after walking through the shops that need to be checked one by one.

On the way back, Liu Binjie was stuffed with a bag of sesame seed cakes in her arms. The owner of the sesame cake shop was a couple whose dispute she had mediated. “Thanks to Sister Liu, she comes to our house every day to do work for us. Now she's fine and there's no more quarrels.”

Returning to the community service hall, Hu Jinling, secretary of the Party branch of the Zhongxin Street community and director of the neighborhood committee, showed reporters the work logs of the grid members. She introduced that there are currently 6 grid members in the Zhongxin Street community. From hand-drawing to computer printing, these ledgers made with feet have gone through many versions of changes. “Our grid members are all capable of both civil and military skills. , wear multiple hats.”

Organized legal knowledge lectures, visited more than 10 households and shops, processed applications for elderly allowances, and received 15 calls from community residents. From consulting on health insurance to helping her children find a partner, Liu Binjie feels that residents have more and more trust in the community through the “little things” such as food, rice, oil and salt.

Near the end of the day, a couple came to the service hall to help their daughter, who had graduated from college, consult about vocational skills training. After recording the basic information, the Central Street Community Grid members will have a direction for their work tomorrow.
