The character will be officially renamed globally for the first time since 1985
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is filled with nods to the game series' long and detailed history, including references to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Jump Man, Mario's game before it was renamed name.
However, one reference that may be difficult for most viewers to understand is a man named spike.
In the movie, we meet him in the restaurant at the beginning of the story, and he appears again near the end of the story. He poked fun at Mario and Luigi in an OTT commercial on TV, and it turns out that Spike is actually a character in the game itself.
However, he originally went by a different name, which Nintendo has officially changed for…well…obvious reasons…
The social media post was translated as saying: “The name of the character 'Blackie' who appears in the home computer software Wrecking Crew will be changed to 'Spike', the same name as in Europe and the United States. In addition, the name in the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” 'Spike'.”
As for Spike (aka “Blackie”), he first appeared in the NES and arcade game Wrecking Crew when it was first released in 1985. Conventionally, he is Mario and Luigi's boss, but was rewritten in the movie as a rival foreman.
