Newcastle fans have claimed the club is “cursed” amid an injury crisis.

The Magpies claimed victory in the day's earlier kick-off at St James' Park. They took the lead thanks to Alexander Isak's penalty but found themselves trailing 3-1 on 48 minutes. However, Newcastle struck back. Harvey Barnes scored twice in seven minutes to give the home side a 4-3 win in a tourney tie on Tyneside, after Issac took another penalty.

While fans will be delighted with the result, Newcastle's growing injury list will also cause concern. Jamal Lascelles started first and limped off in the 17th minute. The returning Tino Liveramento was the next to depart, with Miguel Almiron replacing the youngster. Palagian's afternoon ended after 11 minutes when he was replaced by goal-scorer Barnes.

Newcastle have been hit by a number of injuries this season. Sven Botman is expected to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury. Sandro Tonali has not played this season due to suspension and his future is unclear. Lewis Miley has suffered a lower back injury but is expected to return in May. Callum Wilson is nursing a chest injury and is expected to return in May. Brazilian midfielder Joelinton is out with a thigh injury. Kieran Trippier is suffering from a heel problem, while Nick Pope remains on the sidelines with a shoulder problem.

Newcastle coach Eddie Howe said in an interview with BBC Sports after the game:

“That's the story of our season. Unfortunately, we took a hit today left and right. We were up 1-0 and then Jamaal (Lacelles) came off. Miggy (Almiron) came off and Anthony ( Gordon) got sent off, Tino (Livramento) got off. It was catalog after catalog, but the players we brought in made a positive impact and that’s the beauty of our team.”

This time he continued to praise Barnes: “He is an incredible player. We miss him this season and he will bring us quality wherever he plays. He is a goal scorer and they are very Worthy, his two goals today were of the highest quality. Of course, the last one was unforgettable and will always be remembered, what a great ending. That's the quality he has.”
