“I really don't know what to say”
Rory McIlroy has given his reaction after a disappointing four days at the Masters.
The Northern Irishman is still waiting for his first-ever green jacket – and first major since 2014 – after completing four strokes.
He started the tournament under par despite being under par for the first time since 2018 at the Masters.
But it was as good a result as any for the 34-year-old, who was hoping to complete a career grand slam and win all four majors, but ended up finishing at five over par the next day. 77 missed.
He ended up 15 strokes behind world No. 1 and champion Scotty Scheffler.
According to “GolfMagic”, McIlroy struggled to find the right words to sum up his poor performance after shooting a 73-plus in Sunday's final round.
“I don't really know what to say,” he admitted.
“Feeling like I had a good game and managed it well, but obviously Friday was a very tough day and losing five shots puts me in a pretty difficult spot going into the weekend.”
Asked how to sum up a disappointing weekend, he continued: “I think it's more similar to what I've shown this year.
“It wasn’t a down week compared to the way I was playing.
“It’s just a matter of me trying to get my game in better shape for the rest of the season.”
McIlroy last won a major in 2014, but he will soon try to end a 10-year drought.
The PGA Championship begins on May 16 and will be McIlroy's last major championship.
When asked how he would prepare for this, he responded: “I need to take a moment to reflect on the week and what I did well, what I didn't do well and try to make a better one. Decision. “Plan for the next few months, especially from here on out, obviously through the end of July.
“As you said, the main season, they're coming thick and fast here, so hopefully I can stay in better shape over the last three seasons.”
