Laurentian claimed last year that he was fired because he was “65 years old and a white male”

Former BBC commentator Mark Lawrenson has branded his former employer a “top figure in the woke coalition” after claiming he was sacked for being “65 and a white male”.

Lawrenson spent the best part of 30 years at the BBC before leaving at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Last year he told sunday times: “The Bee is probably the worst person to give you bad news. Just, 'We're going to be on the road with Fox next season. We don't think that's really a good fit for you.'”

In that column, he suggested he was sacked because he was “white and male”, a claim the former Liverpool star further emphasized during an appearance on the Ben Heath Podcast.

He even sensationally claimed that the late Radio 2 producer Steve Wright, as well as the likes of Ken Bruce and Sue Barker, had been “kicked out” in recent years .

Asked if the BBC was woke, he said: “Woke? It's at the top of the woke league.

“They were scared to death, absolutely completely scared to death.

“You've seen what happened with Gary Lineker and the head of the BBC and I think the integrity of the company is being eroded day by day.

“It used to be absolutely fantastic, but they woke up and were 100 percent.”

'They're scared'

Lawrenson continued his argument, claiming the company were afraid of letting anyone speak their mind, and referred to an incident with Gary Lineker last year when he was criticized after comparing the government's recent immigration policies to those of the Nazis was briefly suspended. .

“They're scared, they're saying to everyone you can't do this, you can't say that. Look, it's someone's opinion,” he added.

“The thing about Gary (Lineker) is that he works for himself, so he's entitled to his own opinion. He has an opinion on everything, right or wrong, even within table tennis.

“You used to go to shows with headphones on and they would talk to you in the gallery and someone would ask a question and you wanted to jump in and they would say 'Don't say anything'.

“You said 'what the hell' and that kind of touched me at the end.

“I ran well, but things have just changed. The world has completely changed, hasn't it? There are things you could say just now that are absolutely impossible now.”
