Southgate is in good company
Gareth Southgate is one of a number of names Manchester United are considering to replace Erik ten Hag in the summer, according to reports.
Ten Hag's place becomes increasingly uncertain as United fall further behind in their bid to finish in the top four and look even less likely to win any trophies this season.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe says discussions over Ten Hag's future will take place at the end of the season as he takes over the running of Old Trafford Football Club after buying a minority stake.
Southgate joins two other highly rated managers nominated
While Ratcliffe said nothing will happen until the end of the season, that hasn't stopped speculation or work behind the scenes.
and based on ESPNThe England manager is on the shortlist alongside Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi and Brentford's Thomas Frank.
De Zerbi is one of the most popular managers in the world and is clearly on the radar of Chelsea, Liverpool and even clubs abroad, while Frank is admired for the work he has done in west London.
Southgate could have a hand in bringing him to Old Trafford
Although it has yet to be officially confirmed, Southgate is widely expected to step down as England manager after this summer's European Championships.
Southgate has also previously stated that he is interested in returning to management once his time in charge of the Three Lions is over.
His relationship with Dan Ashworth could be a huge advantage if he were to be considered.
Ashworth and Southgate worked together during their time at the Football Association and now United are looking to fill their director of football position.
He is currently on gardening leave from Newcastle United, who are apparently insisting on a £20m compensation package in order to get him a move to Old Trafford.
