Mourinho to 'walk' to Manchester for second spell in charge of club
According to sources close to Mourinho, Mourinho hopes to return to Manchester United and coach the club for a second time.
Meanwhile, speculation is mounting over the future of current Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.
The Red Devils were beaten 4-0 by Crystal Palace on Monday night. It was their 13th league defeat in a single season, a club record in the Premier League era, and puts them at real risk of missing out on European football entirely next season.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Mourinho, who coached the Old Trafford club from 2016 to 2018, has told his cronies that he will “walk” to Manchester for a second term in charge of the team.
However, it is understood that the club have no plans or inclination to re-appoint the Portuguese and Mourinho does not expect his former club to approach him.
After losing to Crystal Palace, Manchester United is eighth in the Premier League. They haven't finished outside the top seven in the league since 1990.
It now seems almost inevitable that Ten Witches will leave the club at some point this summer. Although he won the League Cup last season and guided United to a second consecutive FA Cup final this year, the Dutchman is yet to get Sir Jim Ratcliffe's hand since buying a 27.7% stake in the club earlier this year. Any verbal support.
In May 2016, Mourinho succeeded Louis van Gaal as Manchester United coach. During his time at the club, he won the League Cup and Europa League and led the club to a second-place finish in the league.
However, a poor start to his third season in 2018 led to his sacking in December of that year.
Most recently, he coached Roma and led them to the 2022 Europa League title.
The Italian club parted ways with him in January but a run of poor form left them ninth in Serie A.
In a recent interview, the Champions League-winning manager said he still wanted to offload “a few players” during his time at Manchester United.
