An oldie, but a golden one.

Jelly Babies are the nation's most popular candy, according to new research from an independent research organization.

Prospectus Global found that up to two-thirds of people in the UK of all ages believe this old classic is the best the country has to offer.

The fruity treat was voted the best treat by 65% of Brits and is said to be “loved” because it reminds people of their childhood.

In second place were fruit gummies with a slightly higher sugar content, which received only 3% fewer votes than Jelly Babies; followed closely by wine gum, which received 60% of the votes.

Coke bottles and everyone's favorite Werther Originals also rounded out the top five.

Jelly Babies are one of the oldest candies ever invented. They were invented in 1864 by an Austrian confectioner working for Fryers in Lancashire.

According to candy historians, he was originally asked to make molds for the jelly bears, but the resulting jelly looked more like a baby and was subsequently given the iconic name.

After the First World War, they were renamed “Peace Babies” by the Bassett's Sweets brand in Sheffield, which still produces them today.

Also in the UK's top ten most popular sweets are Skittles, Starbursts, Liquorice, Donfas and Rhubarb and Custard.

The survey also revealed that Britons chew an average of 19 sweets a week, with 78% of the 2,000 people surveyed claiming that enjoying the sweets they had as children had a magical effect.

Jelly Tots, Fruit Gums, Love Hearts and Lemon Sherbets also made the list, but narrowly missed out on the top ten.

Jonathan Horsley of Prospectus Global said: “Candy is one of life’s simple pleasures. You can see how they stir up nostalgia in people because of the likes of Jelly Babies, Fruit Pastilles, Pear Drops and Childhood classics like Dolly Mix rank among the most popular candies.”

The only person we imagine would be unhappy with this tasty list is the dentist, but even your local dental examiner can't deny the simple joy of eating a Jelly Baby every now and then.
