Jamie Carragher said Casemiro should “know he only has three games left in the top flight” after Manchester United's 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Manchester United suffered a heavy defeat at Selhurst Park on Monday night, the latest disappointing result for Erik ten Hag's side this season.

Ten Hag was forced to play midfielder Casemiro at centre-back in a makeshift back four due to injury, with the Brazilian enduring his toughest game in a United shirt.

The 32-year-old was unable to cope with the pace and skill of Crystal Palace's star duo Eberechi Eze and Michael Ollis, with statistics showing he was dribbled through a staggering eight times – which The most of any player in the Premier League this season.

After the game, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said he believed it was time for the Manchester United player to accept that his time at the “top” of football is over.

He said: “I think Casemiro should know tonight that he only has three games left in the top flight. The next two league and cup finals, then he should be thinking, I need to go to MLS Or Saudi Arabia.”

Casemiro is a five-time Champions League winner and a key figure in Real Madrid's three consecutive championships from 2016 to 2018.

Carragher described the midfielder as “one of the greatest players in modern football” and said he was “a fantastic player and it's impossible to perform like this.”

“His agent or the people around him need to tell him that this has to stop because we are watching one of the greatest players of the modern era dominate Europe playing in one of the best midfields we have ever seen, “He said. “So he's definitely a great guy.”

“But one thing I always remember when I retire is 'leave football before football leaves you'. Football has left him. He needs to finish and make moves at this top level. “

“At that level of player he shouldn't have put himself through something like this. He's a good player and won't be laughed at by Crystal Palace for a performance like this. He needs to call it a day.”

Casemiro joined Manchester United in August 2022 for a reported transfer fee of £60 million. He signed a four-year deal, meaning he still has two years left on his contract at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian impressed in his first season and was named man of the match in the Red Devils' Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle.

However, he hasn't looked like his old self this season and has struggled along with the rest of United's squad.

The loss to Crystal Palace was Manchester United's 13th league defeat of the season, setting a club record in the Premier League.

They are now eighth in the league with three games remaining and are in real danger of missing out on European football entirely.

The Manchester club is two points behind Newcastle in sixth and four behind Tottenham in fifth.
