Adam Sandler pays homage to comics
American comedian and actor Joe Flaherty has died at the age of 82 after a “brief illness.”
Flaherty is known for her roles in Freaks and Geeks, Happy Gilmore and the sketch comedy series SCTV.
His daughter Gudrun Flaherty confirmed his death in a statement.
The 45-year-old wrote: “He left us yesterday after a brief illness and since then I have been trying to come to terms with this huge loss.”
“Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and unwavering passion for the movies of the '40s and '50s.”
“His insights into the golden age of cinema not only shaped his career; they also shaped his career. They are also a source of endless fascination for me,” she continued.
“Over the past few months, while he was facing health challenges, we had the precious opportunity to watch many classic films together – moments that I will always cherish.”
In addition to his comedy work in the United States, Flaherty will be known to many for his memorable cameo in Adam Sandler's iconic comedy Happy Gilmore. Flaherty plays Donald, a heckler who mocks Sandler's character.
Sandler has since paid tribute to Flaherty, saying he “admired him growing up.”
He wrote on
“He got crushed while working as a border guard in the Stripes. It was so funny to have him heckle me on the golf course. The nicest guy you could ever know. A genius as a comedian. And a real sweetheart. The perfect combination .
“Lots of love to his children and grateful for all the greatness Joe brought to all of us.”
In a career that spans nearly half a century, Flaherty has also appeared in TV shows such as “Family” and “Family Guy.”
Flaherty was married to Judith Dagley for 22 years until their divorce in 1996. He leaves behind two children, Gudrun and Gabriel Flaherty.
