Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother star George Gilbey has died following a work accident.
He is 40 years old.
After the news broke, police released a statement about George's death that was widely reported.
Essex Police said: “At around 10am this morning (March 27) we received reports of an incident in Campfield Road, Shoebury, in which a man who was working at height fell and was injured.”
“Ambulance services, including the air ambulance, are at attendance. Unfortunately the man died at the scene. We continue to liaise with partners including the Health and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene…”
George is best known for appearing on Gogglebox alongside his mum and stepdad.
He became an instant hit when he joined Channel 4's second series of the show in 2013.
The family quit the show in 2014, with George entering Celebrity Big Brother that same year and making it all the way to the final.
In 2016, George returned to Gogglebox alongside Linda McGarry and Pete McGarry, entertaining audiences around the world.
Unfortunately, George's stepfather Pete died suddenly in 2021 at the age of 71, and just a few days later, George was told that he only had a few months to live.
Linda said she was “devastated” by her son's death.
She said: “Pete was a lovely man and I was lucky to be with him for 25 years. I said to him, 'Not only have we been together for 25 years, but we've been together day and night. He's mine. life.
“I got a message from a guy I knew who said: 'The average person won't be remembered, but we will always remember Pete – like the pyramids.'” I thought that was beautiful. He was also proud of George when he was on Big Brother. He and George really loved each other. George was really sad. “
Tributes to George have poured in since news of his death broke. One netizen wrote: “Absolutely speechless. George James Gilbey, rest in peace! Thinking of all your family – life is really cruel and there is never hope for tomorrow.”
Another added: “Hope this isn't true. I will miss you George James Gilb – you were one in a million. Fly higher man.”
