A former Formula One world champion has hinted he could make a comeback.

Sebastian Vettel retires in 2022, having finished his career with Aston Martin as a four-time world champion with Red Bull Racing.

But with Lewis Hamilton moving to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, Mercedes is looking for a new driver to partner George Russell.

The 36-year-old has reportedly spoken to a number of team bosses, including Toto Wolff, and suggested he may be ready to take the helm again.

“I'm talking to Toto. I don't know if it qualifies for Mercedes, but there are other things,” the German told Sky Sports News.

“I talked to a lot of people because I knew them, but not very specifically. I mean, obviously it did cross my mind and I did think about it, but it wasn't the main thought.

“I have three kids at home and I’m busy every day, so I have a lot of other ideas. I have a few ideas.

“I plan to continue with some activities, so I'm also talking to a lot of other team principals, not just about racing. There are some ideas, but nothing concrete yet.”

Vettel shocked by Hamilton's decision

Hamilton's decision to leave Mercedes has been one of the biggest talking points in F1 in recent months.

Given that the Briton has been with Mercedes since he first made a name for himself in the sport – starting at McLaren and then moving up the ranks – a fresh start for the seven-time world champion has struck many as Surprise, that included Vettel.

He said: “I was surprised, as I guess most of us were.

“But it's exciting. Obviously he's looking for a new challenge and it's going to be different seeing him in red, different colors.”
