Terrible news has just arrived.
Football player Luke Foles was shot and killed during a carjacking incident.
The Kaizer Chiefs defender was shot dead in Johannesburg.
In a statement from the club, they wrote: “It is with great sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Foles tragically lost his life last night in a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The matter is being dealt with by SAPS and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace.”
The shooting reportedly occurred at a gas station in the city's Florida section on Wednesday night.
While waiting for care, Foles was confronted by gunmen who demanded he hand over his vehicle.
The gunman then shot him and fled the scene.
“The suspect pointed a gun at him, took him out of the car and shot him once in the upper body,” Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mawela Masando explained.
Masando added more context, saying: “While waiting for service from the petrol attendant, he encountered two armed men driving a white BMW 1 Series.
“The suspect pointed a gun at him, removed him from the vehicle and shot him once in the upper body. One suspect fled in the victim's vehicle, followed by his accomplice.”
He was rushed to the nearest medical center but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The police have hired a team of experienced detectives to investigate the murder.
As of this writing, no arrests have been made. Fleurs began his career at Ubuntu Cape Town before spending five years with SuperSport United.
Last year, Foles joined Kaizer Chiefs and made numerous appearances for the South African national team's youth teams, as well as representing them at the Olympics.
