The decision was motivated by alleged historical “unfair treatment”
Fenerbahce threatened to quit the Turkish Super League days after players were attacked by opposition fans.
After the team's 3-2 win over Trabzonspor, missiles thrown from the stands hit several players, including Edin Dzeko, Dusan Tadic and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. Ugly scenes ensued.
A coin hit Livkavojk on the chin and he even bled.
After the game, Trabzonspor fans then broke into the stadium and started attacking Fenerbahce players. Nigeria international Brett Osayi-Samuel and Dutch defender Jaden Ostervold fought back, with Osayi-Samuel even knocking a fan to the ground and punching him.
Just a few months ago, Michy Batshuayi launched a spin kick at a supporter after the Turkish club's president stormed onto the pitch and attacked the referee.
In response to the recent spate of violence, Fenerbahce have warned the league that they may leave if the situation does not improve.
According to “The Athletic”, the decision was due to what the Turkish authorities and government called historic “unfair treatment.”
They are expected to bring the issue to the club's general meeting on April 2.
Earlier this week, club president Ali Kochi said: “The treatment being meted out to Fenerbahce is something we will not tolerate.”
If they choose to withdraw from the league, they will be forced to forfeit their remaining games and thus be relegated to Turkish football's second tier.
