Sexologist Dean Carson confuses viewers

Parents should ask babies to ask their consent before changing their nappies, a sex expert has claimed.

In a 2018 interview with ABC, the “sex educator, speaker and author” explained why parents should ask permission, according to her social media biography reasons, which confuses the audience.

Carson does acknowledge that infants are unable to express permission verbally, but says this can be compensated for by ensuring eye contact is made.

In a section of the interview that focused on consent laws, she said: “We work with children from the age of three. We work with our parents from birth.”

The reporter asked with a puzzled tone: “Since birth?”

“Yeah, just how to build a culture of consent in their home where 'I'm going to change your diaper now, okay?'”

Carson continued, “But if you leave space, wait for body language and wait for eye contact, then you let your child know that their response matters.”

Many viewers were confused and commented on the incident, with one user saying: “So, obviously not an expert.”

Another wrote: “How could a baby refuse consent?”

Shortly after the interview, Carson responded with a statement on Facebook: “Sadly, some people choose to laugh at me (Oh no! Pink hair! Must be a lesbian!) and the idea of giving babies bodily autonomy (in during bowel movements) diaper haha am I right?).

“The work we do with children, teachers and parents is international best practice in preventing abuse.”
