The legendary actor's death was confirmed yesterday.
Yesterday afternoon, the heartbreaking news broke that Bernard Hill had passed away at the age of 79.
Hill first became known for playing Uther Hughes in “Gangster Boys” and his use of the ancient Giza work slogan, before landing roles in blockbusters such as “Gandhi” and “The Bounty.”
However, Hill is perhaps best known for his roles in two of the most important films of the past 30 years – Titanic and The Lord of the Rings.
Hill played Théoden, King of Rohan, in the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Fans of the series will remember his memorable speech in the third film.
Elijah Wood pays tribute to Hill
Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood was in Liverpool over the weekend and has since paid tribute to “our king” Bernard Hill.
Wood shared a photo of Hill on the X website, taken by Viggo Mortensen, who plays Aragorn, and wrote: “Farewell our friend and our king Bernard Hill (Bernard Hill). We will never forget you.
“'For he was tender-hearted, a great king, and kept his oaths; he rose from the shadows to the last good morning.”
Hill also played Captain Edward Smith in the Oscar-winning Titanic and is the only actor in history to appear in more than one of the three films that won 11 Academy Awards.
Hill was born into a Catholic miners' family in Brackley, Manchester, and was a lifelong supporter of Manchester United Football Club.
