Croatia wins unheard of international trophy

There are so many things worth remembering these days

Croatia won the final of the International Capital Cup in Egypt on Tuesday – a tournament no one had ever heard of.

The European national team came from one goal behind to beat Egypt 4-2. Goals from Nikola Vlasic, Bruno Petkovic, Andrei Kramaric and Lovro Mayer ensured victory.

Croatia lifted the trophy in front of an empty stadium at the official awards ceremony.

Initially, the event was named the “Winsunited Cup” and was held in Abu Dhabi, but was rescheduled due to sponsorship reasons.

Algeria, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia also held matches in two different groups, with teams ranked 170th in the FIFA world rankings including Bulgaria and Vanuatu participating.

It was originally designed as a pilot test but following its success it now looks like it will be added to the football calendar permanently.

Infantino backs new competition

At the official unveiling of the World Cup in March, FIFA president Gianni Infantino claimed the tournament was one that many FIFA-ranked countries had long wanted to host.

“The FIFA series is a really positive step forward for national team football on a global level,” he said.

“Our member associations have long told us that they want to test themselves against their peers from around the world. Now they can do that during the current men’s international calendar.

“More meaningful matches will bring more valuable football interactions to players, teams and fans, making tangible contributions to the development of football.”
