TikTok caused them to lose their living space.
An American couple, who have been viewed more than 12.5 million times on TikTok, were evicted from their storage unit after their online popularity attracted the attention of the company that owns the building they live in.
Leland Brown Jr, 28, and his girlfriend Breanna posted a series of videos documenting their daily lives in a storage room they managed to transform into a crude residence, after which they began to gain fans online.
While most of us have experienced the effects of the cost of living crisis in recent years, Brown Jr. and his partner appear to have fallen on some hard times in recent months.
The Pennsylvania native and father of one, who works at McDonald's but has been homeless for the past year, decided to draw from the difficulties of his life by sharing his story with people on social media Something positive. Hope it helps others in similar situations.
Earlier this year, Leland and Brianna both had the idea of upgrading their tent in the woods to warm, dry storage near their hometown of Hatfield, Pennsylvania.
Over the past two months, they've been impressing viewers on TikTok with their interior design skills, transforming a small storage unit into a functional and comfortable home.
In this TikTok, Brown Jr. explains the benefits and perks of living in the unit compared to his previous outdoor home.
“I live in a storage unit because it's cheaper than an apartment. It's actually really comfortable to live here. I get a lot of things I need and want to accomplish here,” he explains in the video.
“I can exercise, I can use the bathroom, I can play music anywhere in the unit,” he added.
“The climate here is controlled, so it's nice and warm. The unit is 24 hours a day. So, I can come here whenever I want and stay as long as I want… and we can take a nap if we need to.”
A week after the above video was posted, Leland returned online to update fans that the couple had been evicted from their temporary home.
According to the company that owns the space, life storageit is illegal to live in one of these units.
After being evicted, the couple sought shelter in a tent in the woods, but their home was quickly damaged by snow and became uninhabitable.
Fortunately, a good Samaritan stepped in and offered to replace their tent and provide accommodation at a local Holiday Inn.
In their time of need, Brown and his girlfriend turned to crowdfunding, launching a GoFundMe page seeking $10,000 in donations with the goal of purchasing an RV and building a tiny home.
So far, the couple has raised $162.
Followers of @fullestness by Brown Jr Tik Tok The page was outraged by the storage unit company for evicting the couple and expressed their disappointment in the comments section of the video.
One user wrote: “Some of us webmasters know that if they weren't causing trouble, we would turn a blind eye. It's a tough world right now. Be kind.”
Another commented: “As a former storage facility property manager…yeah we know but as long as you're not bothering anyone we turn a blind eye.”
“This fund will help provide us with a car and a roof before our next move, ensuring my son has a safe and stable environment to grow up in,” Brown Jr. said in a summary of the GoFundMe page.
