It was one of the PS2’s defining franchises

Sony has decided to revive a classic PlayStation franchise as part of its latest addition of games to PlayStation Plus.

Earlier this month, PlayStation announced the games that would be arriving on its Plus service, making them free to play for subscribers to the service.

The lineup had something for everyone, with sports, horror, fantasy, superhero and LEGO games all added.

But amongst some of the headline additions, Sony also quietly brought a much-loved franchise back from the dead, by adding Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.

The Jak and Daxter franchise was launched in 2001 with the release of The Precursor Legacy on PlayStation 2, and went on to spawn five more games.

Across the franchise, more than 15 million games have been sold, with the first game receiving critical acclaim.

In fact, the Jak and Daxter games are seen as one of the defining franchises for the PS2 console.

Announcing the addition of the game to the platform, PlayStation said: “Jak and Daxter are back in an adventure that picks up the action where the previous trilogy left off.

“Whether battling Sky Pirates in a customizable aircraft or blasting Aeropans with the punishing Gunstaff, their journey will take them beyond the edge of the Brink – and into a war bigger than they could have imagined.

“Originally released for PSP, this enhanced version includes up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters.”

The Lost Frontier was the sixth and final game in the series – and arguably the worst – but with its addition to PlayStation Plus it means only one game from the franchise is not available on the platform.

Reacting to the news, one person wrote: “Jak & daxter lost frontier, let’s go!”

Another said: “Definitely playing jak and Daxter 100 per cent.”

Someone else called for Sony to complete the set on PlayStation Plus by adding 2006 game Daxter.

They wrote: “All we need now is Daxter and we’ll have the entire series playable on PS4/PS5”

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier is available to play now on PlayStation Plus with new save states and up-rendered visuals.
