States with the direct path of the eclipse have the highest number of internet searches

Yesterday, Google searches for terms related to eye pain spiked across the United States as people looked directly at the sun during a solar eclipse.

North America witnessed an incredible total solar eclipse on Monday, with Americans across the country looking up to the sky to witness the rare event of the moon blocking out the sun.

But it seems some people didn't heed health warnings before the event.

Ahead of the eclipse, experts and scientists were keen to warn people that looking directly at the sun was a very bad idea and that people should use special glasses that block UV rays.

But as is often the case, many people decide to ignore this advice, thinking they know better than the experts.

Lo and behold, within hours of the astronomical event, Internet searches for eye pain skyrocketed, and on social media, people complained about their eye injuries.

After snapping photos of the eclipse and sharing them online, one person wrote: “My eyes are boiling right now and my neck is suspiciously sore.”

Another netizen said: “My eyes are sore after staring at the solar eclipse for an hour and a half.”

A third wrote: “I've been watching the eclipse with my naked eye!! I'm suffering now!!! I have a bad headache and my eyes hurt!!”

at the same time, IGN According to reports, “my eyes” was trending on

Wall Street Journal writer Shalom Goodman said in an article on X that in the minutes and hours after the eclipse, Google searches for “my eyes hurt and “Why does my eye hurt?” saw a spike in searches.

Others, meanwhile, noticed that searches for such terms were also much higher in states along the path of the eclipse.

States such as Maine, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Texas are in the direct path of the eclipse, and it's here that internet searches for eye-related pain are highest.

Still, it will be some time before America can sit in the sun's shadow again. The next solar eclipse won't occur until August 23, 2044.
